Miguel Contreras, PhD

Program Officer with the Division of Comparative Medicine

Dr. Contreras is a Program Officer with the Division of Comparative Medicine, in the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP), located within the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director. He manages a research resource grant portfolio that includes aquatic and mammalian models and serves as the Program Coordinator for the SBIR/STTR Small Business program.

Dr. Contreras is a Biochemist from the Universidad de Concepcion, Concepcion, Chile. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Pathobiology from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), in Charleston. He was a Fogarty International Fellow at the Laboratory of Neurosciences, National Institute on Aging, NIH, in Bethesda, MD. Prior to joining ORIP, he was an Assistant Professor at the Charles Darby Children’s Research Institute and the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine, of the MUSC. His research focused on the mechanism of degeneration of the nervous system’s white matter in inherited metabolic disorders that affect peroxisomes and lysosomes (X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy, Globoid cell leukodystrophy).
